I have always wondered what people liked more. Samurai or Ninja? plz, nobody say "i like (whichever) cuz they are cool". Give a good reason.
I vote for the Ronin, the masterless Samurai. I vote for them cuz they were just like Samurai 'cept that they weren't bossed around by a daimyo or shogun. They couldn't be forced to go to war for a trivial cause.

Between Samurai and Ninja, I can't say which one is better because they're two different types of warriors (if some people would classify a ninja as a warrior, I do). A samurai fights in the open, while a ninja fights with stealth. To say which one is better depends on if the poster prefers to fight head on or fight using stealth.
I myself stink HORRIBLY at stealth, but I don't completely agree with the way of the samurai. I don't see ninjas as cowards and samurai as mindless, honorbound idiots: both have their moral standards and priorities, so I respect both.
But I too tend to lean towards the Ronin, Tenbatsu, for the same reasons. They just seem to have a cause of their own, which is what I like.
Shinobi... eh, if I was the stealthy type, I'd vote for them, but for now, my vote goes to the Ronin.

I like Ninja a lot, but i prefer the ronin. I hate it when people say the Ninja are wussies and cowards. Ninja had honor also, they just didn't have as many codes to adhere to compared to the samurai.
I'm not sure if Shinobi counts really, they are just outcast Ninja. Oh well, it's there so I don't want to here any complaining.

I've yet to find a clear definition of what a shinobi is, but going by Tenbatsu's definition, I pick Ninja. As Zur once said "thats not cowardice, its smart."

Alot smarter then running straight at the enemy who's holding muskets and they're all aimed at you. *sometimes doesn't get the way of a samurai*

I don't know much about Japanese styles, but i voted for ninja. It takes great technique and ability to become a ninja, otherwise they would end up

I think it's really like comparing apples and oranges. Neither one is really 'better' in general, but they each have strengths and weaknesses. In samurai, there was strength in having a daimyo or being masterless, but there was also weakness in the same things; often rounin had many hardships to go through and were not viewed on the same level as 'proper' samurai who had a master. Because of this sometimes opportunities were denied them that would otherwise be afforded to other samurai. As for shinobi and ninja...I really didn't think there was much of a difference. I'm not a master on this, and I don't really think most people could say they are as there's not a lot of ninja knowledge out there even today unfortunately in terms of history, but I was under the impression that 'shinobi' was more along the lines of the original term, etymologically, for what became known as 'ninja', that 'ninja' was a more recent term? I didn't think it bore any connotations like rounin and samurai (the first of which is a subclassification of the second, technically!) So anyway, that's my bit. Love! Hushicho

a shinobi was more of a spy/counter-spy. ninja's mostly asassinated. geisha's were the most deadly, though

I'm entirely sure that geisha were not originally assassins or stealth operatives of any kind...perhaps a ninja/shinobi might operate under the cover of being a geisha. It is true that someone such as that might get someone's guard down and easily eliminate them.
I'm still not convinced on the ninja/shinobi topic. I'll do a little more reading and get back to you, but shinobi and their like were never really my favorite subject. In any case, the input is at least interesting.

I still like ronin because they had no master. They were their own masters. They didn't have to take orders from others who may have been corrupt.
I also like ninja because of their fighting style. Stealth, speed, and deadliness. The weapons used by the ninja are more likeable in my eyes. Ninjatou, shuriken, kama, and others that I can't think of at the moment. I want to say kuzarigama but I'm not sure if those were actually used.

Samurai. Without a doubt.
Ronin, yes they are 'bossed around' by nobody but being 'bossed around' was a samurai's biggest wish. Ronin were usually looked down upon. Although I'm sure there were personal freedom bonuses to being a ronin, they had no estates, no incomes, and really no fame (with the exception of a few namely musashi).
As for ninja/shinobi in terms of fighting skill there is no doubt that the samurai were better trained warriors. Ninjas only advantage was they killed by stealth. However I don't believe overall they were a huge threat to the samurai. They were not honored for the work they did because they were spies, assassins, and instigators none of which were honorable proffessions of the time. Ninjas were usually low paid, and few actually went down in history. Also ninjas were sometimes unreliable because they lacked the same honor code the samurai did and if caught in enemy territory were more likely to accept bribes and switch sides.
I can't help but look at the things in the view of the times.

shinobi were just spies/counterspies, don't try to make them something they're not by saying a ninja was more trained. they were trained 4 different things. the definition of shinobi is spy and here's something on geisha's www.gamingw.net/articles/102
